The microstructure of iron-based alloys can be influenced by a number of factors, including composition, carbon content, manufacturing practices, homogeneity, and section size. It is easier to identify heat-treated structures after transformation, but before tempering. The higher the tempering temperature, the more difficult it is to identify the starting structure. However, hardened steels must be tempered, and they are usually examined afterwards, making it more difficult to identify phases and constituents. The identification of specific microstructural constituents, such as bainite and martensite, becomes increasingly challenging as the tempering temperature approaches the lower critical temperature. While nital is widely used for etching, it may not fully reveal all microstructures. Picric acid-based etchants like picral and Vilella's reagent offer excellent alternatives, and 10% sodium metabisulfite (10% SMB) serves as a versatile, safer reagent for steels, combining the benefits of both nital and picral.
