Why are there two numbers for the grit size?
Both the ANSI grit standard in the US and the FEPA grit standard in Europe relate to an average particle size, but use slightly different measurement methods. The ANSI size is succeeded by the term “grit” while he FEPA number is identified by a preceding “P”. A comparison chart is available at www.buehler.com.
CarbiMet starts with fast material removal due to sharp abrasive grains. As the particles become blunt during use, the speed of material removal slows and the potential for sample damage increases. The rate of degradation depends on sample hardness, size, material, applied load, and the grit size being used. To optimize the preparation process and sample quality, we recommend using coarse grit papers for up to 5 minutes, intermediate grits for 2-5 minutes, and very fine grits for 2 minutes or less.
The Pressure Sensitive Adhesive (PSA) becomes stronger with more pressure and longer time in use. Our CarbiMet products utilize an adhesive that sticks well on a wide variety of surfaces but is easy to remove. If the paper becomes difficult to remove, apply Release Agent to the platen prior to use, or use a MagnoPad Teflon coated carrier plate.

The Apex S surface is designed to last hundreds of uses, but can degrade if excess debris becomes stuck to the surface. For cleaning normal debris, rotate the Apex S on a platen at 50rpm and wipe firmly with an ethanol soaked cloth. For cleaning heavily ingrained debris, use a firm silicon scraper (not hard plastic), lubricating the surface with ethanol then clean with a cloth. Do not use other solvents or detergents as this can reduce the lifetime of the Apex S surface.

Begin by firmly applying one edge of the paper and work your way across the platen to push the air out.

Embedding can be prevented by using candle or paraffin wax. Rotate the CarbiMet paper on the platen at ~50rpm, coat the paper lightly with wax, and use as normal. The grinding rate will be reduced, but this will help to eliminate embedding problems.
