#### Frequently Asked Questions

What is UV mounting?

UV mounting utilizes the power of ultraviolet light to initiate the curing of a resin. The resin is not like traditional resins and is formulated so that it responds to the ultraviolet light. In other castable systems, the chemical reaction is initiated when the components are combined.

How does the system work?

The ultraviolet light initiates the reaction by engaging with the photoinitiator of the resin kicking off the chain reactions of polymerization.

What are the main benefits?

There are a few, UV mounting systems often:

- Take less time to cure than epoxy systems
- Yield better quality mounts than acrylic systems
- Reduce waste needed for mounting
- Remove need for mixing , all you have to do is pour
- Increase throughput with up to 24 samples (25-mm samples) per cycle

How long does the process take?

Buehler is the only supplier to allow variation in cure time. The curing cycle can be as short as a couple of minutes or slowed to ~40minutes for heat-sensitive samples.

Do I need to mix anything before use?

No mixing is required just pour.

Should I use mold release?

Yes, mold release is recommended for every mounting cycle.

What equipment is required?

Four components are required for a UV mounting systems:

- SimpliUV: the machine that does the work
- UVKwick: the resin
- UVKups: transparent molds, to allow UV light through

What types of samples can I mount?

Any material type can be mounted. Samples with complex geometries and porosity may prevent UV from reaching the resin, and may not be suitable.

How does UV mounting compare to epoxy?

No mixing is required, which saves in setup time and material waste. Curing time is much shorter for UV resins compared with any epoxy system. The level of shrinkage seen from UV acrylic systems is often higher than that of epoxy systems. If shrinkage is the most important property to you when mounting then epoxies may be the solution for you.

How does UV mounting compare to acrylics?

The key differences are the setup time, mount quality, shrinkage and safety. No mixing is required, which saves in setup time and material waste. Traditional acrylic systems are quite fast but produce a lower quality mount. UVKwick is able to produce quality mounts while having a higher level of clarity, lower shrinkage levels, and reduced hazards.

How well does the UVKwick resin support samples for grinding and polishing?

UVKwick mounts are around 83 Shore D and suitable for mounting samples that require additional preparation for analysis such as grinding and polishing.

Can I adjust the sample position before curing?

If the curing cycle hasn’t been started, the sample in the mold can be moved if needed. Major changes in the viscosity aren’t seen until exposed to UV light.

What if my mount doesn’t fully cure?

Mounts that don’t fully cure can be placed back into the curing chamber and exposed to UV lights to complete the unfinished curing of the mount.

Why does the surface feel slightly tacky?

If the surface of the sample is tacky it is because the top is still in the process of curing. Two things can be done:

- Wiping or rinsing with alcohol
- Extend curing time

Can the resin be put under vacuum?

Uncured UVKwick can used with a vacuum mounting system such as the SimpliVac.

Is UV mounting safe?

The drawer of the SimpliUV contains the UV light inside the system.

What are the safety precautions of the resin?

For safety information please refer to the [SDS](https://www.buehler.com/solutions/buehler-literature/safety-data-sheets/).

Does this work with other mold types?

For best results, UVKups should be used when mounting.

Does this work with Flat Edge Filler?

Yes, this works with Flat Edge Filler.

Does the peak temperature change according to the volume of resin used?

No, unlike most traditional castable systems the volume does not significantly change the peak exothermic temperature for standard mount sizes.

Is release agent required?

It is recommonded that release agent be applied to the mold prior to mounting samples. Adding release agent to the molds can be skipped if have the DeKup tool mold removal tool.

What sizes is the resin available in?

The resin is available in 0.38 kg and 3.8 kg liquid.
